ANECDOTE

Photographing Coyote Bute or The Wave is a rare privilege and to get that privilege I had to participate four times in a lottery administered by the Utah Land Management. This is protected territory and you have to have a 24-hour permit in order to visit legally.

Utah Land Management allows no more than 20 people a day to visit this location. Ten by a web draw and ten are given out by a lottery, which is done in person. Once you're inside the area there are no designated trails, and you have to cross a desert of stone and sand. There is no cell phone reception and its an eight mile return-trip under scorching desert heat of more than 45°C (113 farenheit). Excellent preparation is required to avoid tragic accidents (one person killed in August 2011 and three deaths in July 2013). This expedition was not eased by the 25 kilos of equipment and two gallons of water that I had to bring with me.

I will probably never again visit such a location. This was like finding oneself in the middle of a giant cream-cake made of colored stone. The location was eerily silent, completely isolated and difficult to get to. There was an unsettling quiet. I really savored each moment of this day, with only the company of my girlfriend.

I am truly grateful to have had that morning there. What an unusual landscape.

Three die during hike at The Wave (07-2013)

The striped, undulating slopes of The Wave resemble a stormy sea, with walls that look like clay suspended in motion on a potter’s wheel. A natural draw for photographers, the remote section of Vermilion Cliffs National Monument was relatively obscure until it gained widespread popularity over the last 10 to 15 years, said Kane County Sheriff’s chief deputy Tracy Glover. Last year saw more than 48,000 people apply for just 7,300 permits to hike to the formation on an 8-mile round trip that begins in Utah and ends in Arizona.

"The unusual thing about The Wave is it’s a destination within a wilderness area, so there’s limited resources," Glover said. " The terrain is fairly exposed to the elements, people must traipse through deep sand at times, and there is no formal trail. The nearest emergency resources — in Page, Ariz., and Kanab — are more than 45 miles away.

Last Jully, 27-year-old Elisabeth Ann Bervel died while hiking with her husband a month after Ulrich and Patricia Wahli — 70 and 69, respectively — died of heat exhaustion as temperatures exceeded 110 degrees. They where fairly confident that they knew what they were doing.

They were prepared…
